Tom's Clever Trick

Tom is a junior high school student. He was not able to do his homework yesterday. Today, he is not absent from school. He asks his English teacher a question in class. "Teacher, do you get angry about something a student did not do?" The teacher looks at Tom and answers kindly, "No, of course not. I never get angry about that." Tom smiles and says, "That is great! I did not do my homework today!" The teacher is surprised. She gives him extra homework for tomorrow.

トムは中学生です。昨日は宿題ができませんでしたが、今日は休まず学校へ行きました。そして英語の授業中、先生にこう質問しました。「先生は、生徒がやらなかったことに対して怒ったりしますか？」先生はトムを見つめ、優しく答えました。「いいえ、もちろん怒らないわよ。そんなことで怒るわけないでしょう。」するとトムはニコッと笑って言いました。「よかった！ 僕、今日の宿題をやってきてないんです！」驚いた先生は、明日までの宿題をドッサリ追加で出すのでした。

The Smart Dog

One sunny afternoon, Tom was walking through a park. He saw a man playing chess with a dog. Tom was very surprised. He stopped and watched them for a few minutes. The dog moved a chess piece carefully with its mouth. Tom had never seen such a thing. He said to the man, "Your dog has incredible ability! He is able to play chess like a human!" The man shook his head and replied, "Well, he is not really that smart. We played four games today. I won three times, and he only won once!" Tom smiled and realized that the man treated his dog like a real human player.

ある晴れた日の午後、トムは公園を散歩していました。すると、犬とチェスをしている男性の姿が目に入りました。トムは驚きのあまり足を止め、しばらくその様子を眺めていました。犬は口を使って慎重に駒を動かしています。トムはこんな光景を見たことがありませんでした。

思わずトムは男性に声をかけました。「なんてすごい能力を持った犬でしょう！ まるで人間みたいにチェスができるなんて！」

すると男性は首を横に振り、こう答えました。「いやあ、それほどでもないですよ。今日だって4回対戦して、私の3勝、この子はたった1勝ですからね！」

トムは思わず微笑みました。そして、この男性が愛犬をひとりの立派な対戦相手として接しているのだと気づきました。

The Smart Chess Player

One sunny afternoon, an old man was sitting on a bench in a public park with his dog. A young boy walked by and stopped to watch them. To his surprise, the dog was playing chess with the old man on a small table. The boy could not believe his eyes because the dog moved the pieces with his paw very carefully. The boy said excitedly, 'Your dog has an amazing ability! He is so smart that he can play chess! He must be a genius!' However, the old man just smiled calmly and shook his head. 'Well, he is not really that smart,' replied the old man. 'I am winning the game, and I have already beaten him three times today!' The boy did not know what to say, but he knew that a dog playing chess was still something truly special.

あるよく晴れた日の午後、おじいさんが愛犬を連れて公園のベンチに座っていました。そこへ男の子が通りかかり、足を止めてその様子を眺めました。驚いたことに、犬は小さなテーブルを挟んでおじいさんとチェスをしていたのです。前足で慎重に駒を動かす犬の姿に、男の子は自分の目を疑いました。男の子は興奮気味に言いました。「おじいさん、このワンちゃんすごすぎるよ！ チェスができるなんて頭が良すぎる！ 絶対に天才だよ！」しかし、おじいさんは穏やかに微笑むと、首を横に振りました。「いやいや、それほど賢いわけでもないんじゃよ」とおじいさんは答えます。「現にいまもワシが勝っているし、今日だけでもう3回も勝ち越しているんだからね！」男の子は何と言っていいかわかりませんでしたが、それでもチェスをする犬が特別な存在であることだけは確かだと思いました。

The Honesty Test

A young man named Peter applied for a job at a prestigious international company. He was confident in his ability and spoke enthusiastically about his years spent abroad. During the final interview, the company manager leaned forward with a serious expression and said, 'In our office, honesty is our top priority. Before we begin, I must ask: did you notice the large gold clock above the main entrance when you entered the building?' Peter wanted to impress the manager, so he decided to accept what he thought was a simple test. 'Yes, absolutely, sir! I noticed it immediately, and I even admired its elegant design.' The manager smiled calmly and said, 'That is fascinating, because there is no clock above our main entrance at all.' Feeling embarrassed, Peter quickly tried to fix his mistake. 'Oh, I am sorry! Yesterday I was involved in a minor traffic accident, so my memory is a bit confusing today.' The manager nodded and replied, 'I see. Well, at least you have a great imagination!'

The Job Interview

An ambitious college graduate named Tom was looking for a job after studying abroad. He applied to a prestigious technology firm that evaluated candidates based on their academic achievements and communication skills. During the interview, the manager asked Tom to accept a challenge. She showed him a shiny digital gadget and said, "Sell this to me. Show me your ability to convince a customer." Tom took the gadget, looked at it carefully, and put it in his pocket without saying a word. Then, he stood up and walked toward the exit. The manager was shocked by his strange behavior and shouted, "Hey! Where are you going with that? You cannot just leave with my gadget! That is an accident waiting to happen, and you are acting totally absent from your senses!" Tom stopped near the door, turned around with a calm smile, and said, "If you want your gadget back, that will be two hundred dollars." The manager suddenly realized what Tom had done. By taking the item away, he created an urgent need for her to buy it back. Surprised by his unexpected cleverness, she chuckled and said, "You are hired!"

A renowned physics professor spent months traveling across prestigious universities, delivering an intricate lecture on quantum mechanics. His faithful chauffeur, who invariably sat at the back of every auditorium, listened attentively to every presentation. One evening, while driving to another academic venue, the driver remarked, "Professor, I have heard your presentation so many times that I am confident I could deliver it word for word myself." Amused by the driver's audacity, the professor accepted the challenge. "Since the scholars at our next destination have never met me in person, let us exchange clothes. You shall give the lecture, and I will sit in the back as your driver." The driver agreed enthusiastically. Upon their arrival, the chauffeur took the stage in formal attire and delivered the complex lecture flawlessly, leaving the intellectual audience thoroughly impressed. However, during the subsequent question-and-answer session, an ambitious graduate student stood up and posed an exceedingly intricate question regarding theoretical astrophysics, filled with obscure mathematical equations. The driver did not lose his composure for even a second. He simply smiled condescendingly, shook his head, and said, "I am truly surprised by such a basic inquiry. That question is so absurdly simple that I will let my driver, who is sitting quietly in the back row, demonstrate just how easy it is to answer."
