A New Friend from Egypt

Tariq is a new student at our junior high school. He comes from Egypt. He can speak Arabic and English. Today, he arrives at our classroom at 9:00 a.m. We say hello to him with big smiles. In art class, Tariq draws nice pictures of the pyramids. We draw pictures of Mount Fuji for him. We share our pictures and talk about our cultures. We learn many interesting things from each other. It is very fun to make friends from different countries.

Art Connects Our Town

Every year, our community center holds a multicultural art festival. People from different countries arrive early at 9:00 a.m. to set up their booths. Visitors can see beautiful traditional art from around the world. Last year, a woman taught Arabic calligraphy to local children. She wore a colorful apron to protect her clothes. Many people gathered around her table. Children tried to write their names from right to left. The arrival of new neighbors brings fresh ideas to our town. Through art and food, everyone learns about different cultures and makes new friends.

毎年、地域のコミュニティセンターでは多文化アートフェスティバルが開かれます。世界各地から集まった出展者たちは、ブースの準備をするために午前9時早くに到着します。来場者は世界中の美しい伝統芸術に触れることができます。昨年は、ある女性が地元の子供たちにアラビア語の書道を教えてくれました。彼女は服を汚さないようカラフルなエプロンを着けており、その周りには大勢の人が集まりました。子供たちは右から左へと自分の名前を書くことに挑戦しました。新しい住民たちの参加は、町に新鮮な発想をもたらしてくれます。芸術や食を通じて、誰もが異なる文化について学び、新しい友人を作っています。

A Day of Sharing Cultures

Every autumn, our local community center holds an exciting international festival. People from different countries arrive at 10 a.m. to share their traditional culture. Last year, I visited a popular booth that showed beautiful Arabic calligraphy. The artist wrote visitors' names with special ink and careful brushstrokes. I learned that in Arabic art, writing words is treated as a high form of visual expression. Near that booth, another friendly group wore colorful aprons and served delicious dishes from South America. Visitors enjoyed tasting unusual food and listening to live folk music from around the world. We talked with many neighbors and discovered unique customs. This wonderful event shows that cultural diversity makes our town lively and welcoming. Meeting people from diverse backgrounds helps our community grow friendlier. When you experience different cultures, you can understand other viewpoints. We are already looking forward to the arrival of next year's festival.

毎年の秋、地元のコミュニティセンターでは心躍る国際フェスティバルが開かれます。様々な国から集まった人々が午前10時にやって来て、それぞれの伝統文化を紹介し合います。昨年、私は美しいアラビア書道を紹介している人気のブースを訪ねました。アーティストは特別なインクと繊細な筆づかいで、来場者の名前を書いてくれました。アラビア美術では文字を書くことが高度な視覚芸術として大切にされていることを知りました。そのブースの近くでは、色鮮やかなエプロンを着た親切なグループが南米のおいしい料理をふるまっていました。訪れた人々は珍しい味を楽しみ、世界各地の民族音楽の生演奏に耳を傾けていました。私たちは地域の人々とたくさん語り合い、独自の習慣を知ることができました。この素晴らしい催しは、文化の多様性が私たちの町を活気ある親しみやすい場所にしていることを教えてくれます。多様な背景を持つ人々と出会うことで、地域はより温かい結びつきを育むことができます。異なる文化に触れると、相手のものの見方を深く理解できるようになります。私たちは今から来年のフェスティバルの訪れを楽しみにしています。

In our modern world, many towns are becoming vibrant multicultural communities where residents from different backgrounds live side by side. Last weekend, our local community center held a cultural festival to celebrate the arrival of international newcomers. One popular booth featured Arabic calligraphy, allowing visitors to appreciate this delicate form of traditional art while having their names written in graceful flowing letters. Nearby, families shared homemade dishes, discovering that diverse cooking styles could bring people together even when language seemed like a barrier. Local volunteers helped organize activities so that children and adults could interact easily. By sharing these everyday customs, neighbors built meaningful connections and learned to appreciate differences. Such events broaden our perspectives and show that true harmony grows when community members welcome each other with warmth, curiosity, and mutual respect.

Building Bridges in a Diverse Community

In many cities today, neighborhood community centers play an essential role in bringing people together. As our society becomes more diverse, local residents meet neighbors from various cultural backgrounds. When newcomers arrive in a new neighborhood, adjusting to unfamiliar customs can be challenging. To celebrate the arrival of new families and support cultural harmony, one local community organized a special event called the Multicultural Morning Fair.

The fair began at 9:00 a.m. with welcoming speeches in several languages. Throughout the community hall, colorful booths introduced traditional foods, clothing, and daily customs. At one booth, visitors learned that the common Arabic greeting "As-salamu alaykum" means "Peace be upon you," expressing a wish for safety and goodwill. At another station, an artist demonstrated the beauty of traditional art through Middle Eastern calligraphy, showing participants how to write their names in elegant curving strokes.

Through these hands-on workshops, participants realized that language and art are powerful tools that help overcome communication barriers. By talking, creating, and sharing stories, neighbors formed warm friendships and gained a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives. Living in harmony does not mean forgetting our differences; it means respecting each other and building an inclusive community together.

Grassroots initiatives play a vital role in building these bridges. For instance, community kitchen workshops allow long-term residents and newcomers to interact naturally. Wearing a simple apron and preparing traditional meals—such as aromatic Arabic pastries alongside regional stews—transforms cooking into a universal language. As neighbors exchange family recipes, they discover shared human values beneath superficial cultural differences. Such collaborative activities foster genuine connections and ease social tensions.

Furthermore, collaborative public art projects empower diverse voices to shape the physical landscape of their towns. By encouraging residents to celebrate cultural diversity rather than fear it, modern neighborhoods can transform potential divisions into collective strength, paving the way for harmonious and enriching community life.

多文化化が進む現代社会において、すべての住民が大切にされていると感じられるような寛容な環境づくりは、大きな可能性と同時に課題も伴います。新たな移住者が新しい地域に足を踏み入れたとき、言葉の壁や馴染みのない生活習慣から孤立感を抱いてしまうことが少なくありません。しかし、世界各地の活気あるコミュニティは、真の社会統合とは自らのルーツを捨てることではなく、互いへの興味や共通の体験を通じてこそ育まれるものだと示しています。
